A Book Worth Reading

Note: While this isn’t a post all about SEO, I decided to put it in the SEO category mainly because of the last paragraph or two. Read on to find out what I’m talking about!

A while ago, Joe left a comment on one of my blog posts recommending a book called ‘The $100 Startup’ to me. To be honest I’m not much of a reader (probably haven’t read a book in a year or two!) but after looking up the book on Amazon.co.uk (also available at Amazon.com) and seeing all of the good reviews I decided to give it a shot, especially since it was under £10. I wasn’t really too sure whether it was a good idea to write about this book on here since it’s not really about internet marketing, but I think plenty of people will learn a few things from this book that will help them become better internet marketers.

I’m not really going to go in to too much detail about the book, since I think you’re better off reading the whole thing rather than reading about what I thought were the most important points in the book (I guess everyone will learn different things from it anyway?). Basically, if you’re thinking about setting up a new business (whether it’s an online business or not) then it’s definitely worth having a read of this. Without meaning to sound bad, I never even heard of Chris Guillebeua before I read this book, but now I know that he’s probably one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world. To give you some sort of an idea of how much money he’s made, at the World Domination Summit (WDS) he gave away $100,000 worth of $100 bills to try inspire people to start their own business. But as you’ll find out in the book, being an entrepreneur isn’t all about the amount of money you make, it’s about doing something that you love – and Chris is doing this by travelling the world while making money at the same time. At the moment he has been in over 180 countries which is quite impressive!

$100 mightn’t sound like a lot of money to start a proper business, but there are loads of entrepreneurs that Chris interviewed in the book (Over 1,400 entrepreneurs sent in their information to Chris willing to share their story for the book, but just over 100 ended up in the book as far as I know) that spent around $100 including Brett Kelly who has made $160,000 from a single E-Book.

However, the book isn’t all about other people’s experiences though, Chris shares loads of information about his own projects too. Some of this information includes ‘The one-page business plan’, ‘The 39-step product launch checklist’ and loads more, which can also be found at the $100 Startup site under resources. Just one of these projects was the ‘Empire Building Kit’ which was an online business course that Chris had put together. At launch alone, it made a massive $100,000. Now most of us reading this know a bit about SEO and probably think that he must know a lot about it to get so many people to buy something like this from him online, so I decided to email him and ask him a few questions, including “Do you know anything about SEO?” since I assumed that he must know more than your average person about SEO to do so well online. Within 15 minutes or so I got a reply:

“I don’t do any SEO – I focus entirely on making something interesting and useful.”

I think this is where most affiliates and so on, including myself make a huge mistake. Most of us spend too much time trying to get quality backlinks and so on rather than making something that’s “interesting and useful”. In 2013 I’m going to try this and see what happens, who needs SEO!?
